This natural, shallow draft inlet is not marked by buoys and requires local knowledge to navigate. While fairly straight, the outer opening can be very hard to “read” from the ocean side when seas are over 2’. It separates Hugh Taft Island (joined with Lea Island]]) from Figure Eight Island. It is connected to the Intracoastal Waterway on the north side by Green Channel and on the south side by Nixon Channel.

Rich’s inlet is a favorite spot to fish. You will find anglers fishing the shoals on the outer edges of the inlet and the marshy areas behind the inlet as well as in the deep channel of the inlet itself. This is a favorite area for big red drum at certain times of the year as well as blues, flounder, and others.
