Pinfish

Pinfish, Lagodon rhomboides, are also known as sea bream, pin perch, and sand perch.  They are a small fish with an oval body, small mouth and sharp dorsal spines (this is where they derive their name).  The body is silvery with yellow and blue horizontal stripes and four or five vertical lines.  Their is a black spot behind the gill cover.

They can grow up to 8 inches, but common catches are in the range of 2 to 4 inches.  They are generally considered a “trash fish” and are notorious bait stealers.  They are very bony and difficult to eat.  However they are easy to catch and so are a favorite target of young anglers.  They are also used as live bait.
