This inlet connect Topsail Sound with the ocean at the southern end of Topsail IslandLea Island forms the other side of the inlet.  This is a shallow draft inlet and is dredged by the Army Corp of Engineers as funding permits.  The channel leading through the inlet is market by Coast Guard maintained buoys however caution is needed when using the inlet as the shoals shift and sometime the buoys will break free or shift.

The inlet is connected to the Intracoastal waterway via Topsail Creek, locally referred to as the “S” curve, which starts at marker 99 and via Banks Channel which runs behind Topsail Island from marker 86 to the inlet channel.
