Inlets are connections between the waters behind the barrier islands and the ocean. They allow water to enter and exit the sound with the tide changes as well provide a channel for aquatic animals and boats to traverse. There is an inlet at each end of Topsail Island. New River Inlet is on the north end of the island and New Topsail Inlet is on the south.
