There are a number of artificial reefs along North Carolinas coast. They are made from a variety of materials including old vessels (liberty ships, tugs, etc) concrete pipes, railroad cars and similar items. The items are placed by local clubs and organizations in conjunction with the NC Division of Marine Fishers (NCDMF). The are designated with the letters AR and a 3 digit numbers, example: AR360. However ,most anglers call them by a name versus the official designation, for instance AR360 is called the “tire reef” because the first material used there was old tires. . A buoy is placed near the material to help anglers find the location. The GPS numbers are published on the NCDMF web site and are also listed on this site (see links below).
