Flounder Gigging

I had the pleasure of going gigging for a few hours with Breadman last night. The wind was calm and the tide falling so we headed out just as it got dark. It didn’t take long before we had the first fish in the boat. Within an hour and a half I had gigged 6 fish limit including the two 5 pounders in the picture. We stayed for another hour or so and gigged a few more fish. We saw lots of barely legal fish which we did not gig. They are out there guys, go get you some!

Nice trip! I took my family on a guided Flounder Gigging trip out of Fernandina/Amelia Island on July 6th, 2011… We gigged two, the guide gigged 10 right out from under the noses of his clients… said it was his job to put fish in the boat… every trip I’ve ever guided was to put clients on the fish! When I told him to put up his Gig, he got mad,, pulled away from the shore line and made sure we didn’t see anything else til the trip was over, then didn’t even clean the fish HE Gigged!!! Sad Part was,, this was the first time my niece and nephew had ever been on a guided trip, first time flounder gigging and they are our upcoming sportsmen/women of the future that the guide repeatedly gigged flounder right out from under their noses while traveling to fast for the kids….. shame on him….

Randy - I agree with you, I want a guide that will put me on the fish and SHOW me how to fish, not fish for me.  A big part of gigging is seeing the fish, they hide well.  By buddy Allen who is a guide, is patient and will make sure you see the fish and gig it.  When we go we both gig but when he takes charters, he doesn’t even hold a gig.  Flounder at night do not spook easily - even if they do spook they only move a few feet - so an attentive guide can usually get you that fish once spotted!  If you are ever int his area, try Capt. Allen Jernigen, with Breadman Ventures.
