This type of advice is EXACTLY why I chose to join this site.  I’ve caught a few puppy drum but never that big one I want.
I pretty much just surf fish @ Topsail when I’m down from Greensboro a couple of weeks a year.  Any good advice for bait or technique from the surf?  Thanks

Scout the beach at low tide looking for the sand bars that are often parallel the beach, then look for the end or better yet a break in the bar - its is near the break or channel that you’ll find the reds hanging out waiting for the bait fish to go through that cut or slew.  Live finger mullet are a great bait, you can catch your own with a cast net back in the sound.

Another good spots is around the shoals at the end of the island - just be careful not to wade out intot he current - it can be VERY strong.

Let us know how you do.

Yeah - I wasn’t sure if you were still checking this board as it has been a while since you posted here so I went ahead and answered his question.
