Inlet Dredging schedule

I just received a copy of the 2012 Army Corp of Engineers dredging schedule for operations out of the Wilmington district. New River inlet is currently on the schedule but New Topsail Inlet is scheduled for dredging from June 27th through July 12th. This will be done by the brand new dredge - the Murden, which is die to be placed in service in February.

I did note that the Merritt is on “standby” all year (no scheduled jobs) so maybe if some more funding comes available they will be able to add New River to the schedule.

Interested if anyone has been out of Topsail inlet or Rich’s inlet since the storm, and if it is better or worse for navigation?

Hurricane Irene

I have had a number of people email me about Hurricane Irene so I thought I’d post an update here. For the most part the damage was minimal in the Topsail Area, mostly down trees and some power outages. A few houses suffered some roof damage and siding issues, but very little flooding was reported in homes. To the best of my knowledge all of the main streets on the island are open (North Topsail Beach has a few blocks on side streets that were still closed yesterday due to standing water).

SeaView Pier did have a bit of damage to some cross members on the end of the pier. The pier is open but the end is roped off till the repairs are complete. Surf City Pier has some damage to one piling support but it s not in a critical area, the pier is open for business. I haven’t heard a report from Jolly Roger Pier.

The water is murky brown from all the sand in the water and the run-off in the sound. I think the water will return to normal pretty quick, definitely by the week-end.

New Ramp coming?

It looks like Pender county and Developer David Geer have worked out an agreement that will allow the state to purchase almost 7 acres of land off Lewis road in Hampstead to build a ramp. They have the funds so now its just a matter of getting all the approvals. This is great news!

Currently the only public ramp on coastal waters in Pender is in Surf City on the island. This will also be a NC Wildlife Resources maintained ramp.

Tides

I was having a discussion about tide times with someone this weekend and we’re sorta stumped. If, let’s say on 7/25, high tide at New River is at 11:04 am and high tide at New Topsail is at 11:08 am, then what time is high tide in the ICW at Surf City? Same thing for low tide, if Low tide is at 5:12pm at New River and 5:55pm at New Topsail, then when is low tide at Surf City? Since we do a lot of skinny water fishing, we’re trying to learn how to figure the tides in the ICW versus the Inlets. The same question also arises for New River, how do you figure high/low tide for the river?

I would appreciate any help anyone (TA) can give.

Thanks a lot guys,
