Gery (hunters haven) and I left the dock about 6:15 this morning to do some trolling. Our first stop was at the hard bottom and ledges about a mile of the beach in front of the Jolly Roger hotel. We caught a couple of nice Spanish Mackerel, one weighed over 4 pounds, and a small bluefish.

After an hour or so we decided to head further out as we really had hoped to find a king or two. We went to four or 5 different locations over the next few hours with not so much as a sniff. We came back to the Jolly Roger reef and tried a few more passes then headed home about 1:00. The seas were very calm and very little wind. Gery and I commented on how different that patch of ocean is likely to be two days from now…........

Took the boat for a ride solo this morning. Decided to look for some new spots on high tide , turned out I didn’t have much luck. My oldest says I have a black cloud over my boat when Sarah is not with me, I am starting to think this is true. Unless their was a banana hidden some where on board.
finally found a small school of bluefish, put one in the cooler with hopes of landing more but all I did is loose a few hooks. Hit some usual spots that keep me going most of the time, but hit it on slack tide and decided to call it a day.
Have some family coming in this week. So I hope the weather holds out so we get some good fishing in and hopefully few reports.

I went fishing with my friends Taylor and Andrew yesterday. We headed out to some nice hard bottom about 25 nautical miles and started trolling ballyhoo with a variety of skirts and chuggers. We only had three lines out when the port side line went off. Andrew reeled in a nice 6 - 7 pound Dolphin. We were all pumped up thinking we were onto the bite. We had one other knock down a few minutes later, well two within in seconds of each other but we think it was the same fish. That was it for the next 3 hours.

We switched over to bottom fishing but were mostly catching trash fish. So we decided to head over to the WR2. We stuck out some trolling gear when we started getting close and pretty soon we were getting some knock downs but no hook-ups - from the look of the bite marks on the bait we figured it must have been small dolphin. Then we got a line burner, I picked up the rod and was holding on when the reel just quit buzzing. Pulled on the rod, no fish. Pulled the line in and saw that the fish had bite through the line at the hook - the skirt and chin weight were still attached (held in place by the nose spring) - looked like the work of a Wahoo.

Then we switched over to bottom fishing again and caught some nice really nice black sea bass on Roscoe jigs.

We headed back about 4pm making great time in the calm seas and arrived back at the ramp before 5:30. Slow catching day but we had a great time and enjoyed the nice weather!

Looking for ideas on where to go tomorrow with my 13 year old son looking for reds in the Topsail area. Thinking about fishing the last couple hours of the falling tide and the first couple of the flooding tide. Will get some live bait in the morning, but not sure where to go except exploring creeks and bays from Surf City down to Lea Island.
If anyone has any suggestions, would appreciate the help.

We hit the water at 7:30 this morning. Cool, rainy, light NNE wind. By 10:30 we had over 35+ fish in the boat. We caught reds from rat size to 30.” The biggest two were 29” and 30.” ALL ON TOP WATER. I am hooked on the Badonkadonks. We found a surprise school of fish also. Something kept slurping little pogies in about 1.5’ of water. Thought it was small trout. After 5-6 failed hookups on topwater, finally connected with one of these fish. It was a school of 18” Striper. Caught 5-6 of those. Kept one in the livewell that was 18.5” and called Topsail Angler to see what he knew of the regs. I then called DMF. It took DMF a couple of hours to get back to me with an answer. TA said he thought they were closed, from what he read, and DMF confirmed that. Striper gets to go free. By 11am we were done, and the fish were still blowing the topwater up when we left. I took my son to a sandbar with tired arms so he could swim and play for a few hours. TA had ragged me about catching reds instead of flounder, so after he was done playing on the bar, we tied some 4” Gulp Pearl shrimp on, and caught two 16”. Come on home after that. Great day fishing!!! This is why I say Aug. fishing is some of the best.

We started fishing in the vicinity of Surf City this morning at 9 am. Fished til 12pm. We hit an area of a bay we had not fished since spring. Glad we did. Two seperate schools of fish in there, one of which I would not be scared to say is 700+ fish. This school of reds was larger than my house. The bad part is you would throw a topwater, work it across the school, immediate hookup. But when that red blew up the bait, the rest of the school would go haywire. Eruption. Amazing sight, wish I had brought my video camera for those that have never seen reds pushing water like this. After the fish, it would take 10-15mins. for the school to come together so we could locate them again. Caught 12-14 fish total. Badonkadonk topwater put them all in the boat. Left the fish still active at noon on topwater. They were in 8in of water to 2’. Look at the pic of the tiny one eating topwater. Hounnngry. Biggest fish was 25”-26,” and my son caught that one.
